Tokay geckos are very fascinating pets. Known for their bluish grey color and orange spots, and their short temperateness, Tokays have a sensitive sense of smell and taste. They love eating insects, especially live ones. Their diet plays an important role in their overall health. This is the reason you need to give particular attention when feeding your geckos.

There are a large number of animals that feeds on insects for their nourishment. Insects have high iron, B vitamins and protein value needed to supply energy and maintain a healthy body. An adult Tokay can consume 3 to 5 crickets every other day, though it can consume more depending on their activity and condition. For instance, a gravid female may need to eat more crickets than non-gravid females to meet their nutritional needs for them to lay healthy eggs. However, it is not advisable to over feed or force feed your gecko unless they are recovering from an illness, or just have laid eggs. But nonetheless, feeding your gecko is rather easy if you know what to feed them. You may want to consider the following choices:

Crickets.

This feeder insect is one of the most nutrient rich foods for your Tokay and they are very accessible. You can buy them in almost every pet store nationwide. They are high in protein and B vitamins. Crickets are considered the staple food for most gecko owners.

Worms.

Though they are not very pleasing for humans, worms are very good source of nourishment for Tokays. Mealworms and wax worms are very rich in dietary fat and valuable protein. They are good nutrient source for recovering females after laying eggs. Also, Tokay geckos recovering from illness can greatly benefit from its dietary fats to easily recover lost energy and gain weight. However, you don’t want to over feed your gecko with wax worms. They are very addictive to geckos and they may refuse to eat other food other than wax worm which may lead to obesity.

Beetles.

In their natural habitat, Tokay geckos often eat small insects. This includes beetles. Beetles contain proteins, vitamin B, and phosphorus. However, beetles may not be as available as meal worms and crickets since they are hard to breed and only few gecko owners use them to feed their Tokay geckos.

Grasshoppers.

You can find them in your own backyard. But if you choose to feed your Tokays with grasshoppers, make sure that they are small enough for your Tokay geckos. Grasshoppers are very active insect and may harm your Tokay gecko if they’re big enough to put up a fight. But nonetheless, grasshoppers are very rich in protein. They actually contain twice the protein content of crickets.

Spiders.

They are very rich in dietary fat and protein. So if you want to get rid of the spiders in your ceiling, you can feed them to your Tokay gecko.
